I have made 4 different, beautifully colour coded, exam timetables but not actually revised anything yet!

Well, can you say it?  ‘I have made 4 different, beautifully colour coded, exam timetables but not actually revised anything yet!’  This little statement sounds a bit like one of those groups that are going around on facebook at the moment, doesn’t it!

I know when I was revising, I always spent at least one day making up an exam timetable.  Then another day tidying my desk (which was code for watching Murder She Wrote!)  Then I spent another afternoon going into town to get just the right colour of highlighter…. and only then I maybe thought about revising for a wee while. That was before I needed another ten minute (usually at least 45 mins) break!  Any of this sound familiar?

Check out this cartoon for another little thought about putting off revision in favour of surfing the internet: http://www.youthworkinternational.com/categories/20090110_1

I do not envy all the students who counting down the days to exams at the moment.  In fact one of the best things about working is that I don’t have to revise anymore, however there are still lots of things that I find to procastinate about… nothing really changes!

This got me thinking though… do we put things off in our spiritual life also?  If you are honest have you ever said to yourself:

  • ‘I need to get the right Bible reading notes before I can read my Bible every day?’
  • ‘I’m just too busy to pray today, but it’s ok because God knows everything anyway!’
  • ‘I have plenty of time before I need to think about becoming a Christian properly.  If I gave my life to Christ now, I wouldn’t be able to do {blank for you to fill in your own answer here!}’

It is so easy to put things off, but by putting God in the back seat of our lives, we are missing out on so many blessings that He has for us!

One of my best friends has a little bit of paper stuck above her desk with the following Bible verse written on it.

23Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, 24since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.  (Colossians 3:23-24)

I noticed it when we were both revising for exams and it really made me think about my attitude to studying.  I still have this verse pinned up in my room, and if you keep your eyes peeled you will also find it verse on the ‘worship’ page of next year’s Senior & Brigader Journals!

So stop procastinating by reading this blog and get back to work!
